Process

In "Write Before Writing," Murray describes two contrasting approaches to writing: his and Joyce Carol Oates. In her reflection on her process Oates says she spends much of her time thinking about what she will write and "By the time I get to actually write, I've worked it out pretty clearly, so I can eliminate all those first and second drafts" (18).

Murray says, "I never know the end before I begin and wouldn't want to, because it would limit the discovery through writing that is central to my process, and the main reason I write, to discover what I didn't know I knew" (18).

Which approach, Oates's or Murray's, best describes your writing process? Or is it a combination? Explain.

Do you think writing in school favors either one of these processes? How?
